Judson Beaumont was a well-known Vancouver furniture designer known for his playful and unconventional furniture designs. He founded his studio Straight Line Designs and created a variety of furniture pieces that often featured anthropomorphic elements or surreal twists. Some of his famous works include a dresser that sits on a sand hill like a weary traveler and a coffee table that lifts a leg to "pee" on the carpet. Waiting grandfather clock: One of his notable pieces is a grandfather clock that takes on human features and "waits" on a bench as if it were alive. Design philosophy: Beaumont's rule was, "If you can draw it and design it, you can build it." He loved it when someone told him, "You can't build that" or "Nobody wants that." These words only encouraged him more. Cultural influence: His work was a big draw at Vancouver's annual Eastside Culture Crawl, leaving a lasting impression on visitors and colleagues. Memories: Sadly, Judson Beaumont passed away suddenly in February 2020 at the age of 59. However, his legacy and creative furniture pieces will live on. Beaumont's unique designs and ability to combine creativity and functionality have had a lasting impact on the furniture design industry.
