The black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) is a native species of southern and eastern Africa and one of two surviving African rhinos. Once numbering around 850,000 individuals, intensive poaching for its horn reduced the population to only a few thousand. Today, over 6,000 remain, mostly in protected reserves in South Africa, Kenya, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. Standing 1.3–1.8 m tall, it has thick gray skin and two keratin horns, with the front horn usually longer. A browser, it feeds mainly on shrubs and woody plants using its prehensile upper lip. Despite gradual recovery, it remains critically endangered due to poaching.
